After years of being asked to get a dog, I finally relented. I
had two criteria for a dog, I wanted a pointing breed, and I wanted a small dog.
After doing my homework I settled on the Epagneul Breton often referred to as a
French Brittany in the U.S. Little did I know
where it would take me and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I started
out just looking for a dog to do some hunting with, but as hunting season is
only 2 1/2 months, I found myself looking for something more to do. So I entered
Vern in his first hunt test. After that weekend I was hooked. I have since
competed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Georgia, Kentucky, Montana,
Arizona and in October of 2006 we went to France, where Vern was, to our
knowledge, the first American bred and trained dog to receive a C.A.C.T.
Epagneul Bretons, like any of the Pointing Breeds are a high energy dog that
need to have a purpose in their life. They are best suited for a family that
likes to hunt, but they enjoy any kind of activity that can get their blood
flowing such as Agility, as they are a quick nimble dog. They are very
personable dogs, and enjoy being with you whenever they can. They are easy to
train by anyone willing to put in the time that is needed, as they are eager to
please you, and do well with a gentle hand. When properly introduced to the gun
and field, they are a fearless and tireless hunter, eagerly seeking out game.
I seek to produce Epagneul Bretons, that are bold and confident in the field, but after a
good days hunt, will curl up by your feet in front of the fireplace and be your
companion. While I compete in Field Trials and Shows, I understand that is not
for most people. I am first and foremost looking to produce dogs for the hunter,
because as much as I enjoy competing, it is a good days hunt that will always
come first!!
All of my dogs have their hips certified at 2 years of age, and I guarantee
puppies to be free from Hip Dysplasia for 2 1/2 years. All of my dogs are
dual registered with AKC and UKC and are also DNA profiled with each.
